Work on a ‘live’ trading site is never straightforward and the transformation of the Buttermarket into a thoroughly modern, 21st century retail and leisure complex was no exception. Originally built in 1992 the shopping centre required significant alterations to accommodate a new 12 screen cinema, bowling alley and 24-hour gymnasium; a contract which would take Simons 65 weeks on site to complete.
Major alterations included removing an existing glazed construction to create a new outdoor seating area; installation of new roof trusses and the removal of nine escalators which were replaced with two new ones along with four new lifts. The alterations created a further nine new food units which are now occupied, amongst others, by High Street favourites Wagamamas, Prezzo and Cosy Club.
Careful planning and execution also allowed for exiting tenants TK Maxx and New Look to be re-located to larger units within the complex without major disruption to their trading operations.
The entire transformation was completed in October 2016 to the customer’s brief and satisfaction.
