Councillors approve new retail development for Scunthorpe
North Lincolnshire Council's planning committee has again approved a new retail development, including a new Marks & Spencer store, on Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe.
The plans were originally approved in December but were returned to the Planning Committee to clarify some details relating to the sequential test.
The Doncaster Road site plans will mean a new, 35,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer alongside 50,000 sq ft of additional retail, representing a 20m investment in Scunthorpe and the creation of around 300 new jobs.
Chris Newsome, Development Director for Simons said: "This is fantastic news for Scunthorpe and a great day for all those local people who have supported the plans from the very start. This development will enable more people to spend locally rather than having to travel further afield, as we know happens at the moment. At a time of continuing economic uncertainty, this is a great boost for the town. I would like to thank everyone for the continued support they have shown. A lot of local people dedicated their time to attend the meeting and we are thrilled that they received such good news."
Construction of the new development is expected to begin later this year.
