Double success for Simons Group at John Lewis Partnership Supplier Awards

Judges have awarded Simons Group as 'Highly commended‘ for both the Responsible Development Innovation and Waitrose ‘Treading Lightly‘ Waste awards at the 2014 John Lewis Partnership‘s Supplier Sustainability Awards.

With entries demonstrating shared values and commitment to sustainability, the judging was completed by an expert panel of judges, including the UK Green Building Council, with the awards being recognised later in the month.

Simons have been recognised for their development project with Waitrose in Malmesbury, Wiltshire and the company’s overall approach to waste management across work on the Partnership’s property portfolio. The project in Malmesbury for Waitrose was an extensive planning application for a 28,000 sq ft foodstore, with 200 parking spaces and has involved over three years of collaboration. The work involved a shell build and a fitout and opened for business in early August. The project managed to divert 99.83% of waste from diversion, with the team on site engaging the supply chain to show how waste can be successfully treated as resource off site, creating bird boxes for the local community and biodiversity stacks amongst the landscaping, whilst also encouraging the supply chain to think about its approach to sustainability on site.

Earlier this year, Simons completed the shell of a new distribution centre at Milton Keynes for John Lewis Partnership, which included a 90m link bridge to a warehouse previously delivered by Simons. The project team managed to divert 100% of waste from landfill and ensured the highest waste reduction level set by BREEAM 2011, of 1180 tonnes by 72%, with an air tightness of less than 1. The project team also utilised the National Community Wood Recycling Project, resulting in 20 tonnes of timber being taken off site. This timber was almost entirely packing and pallets, leading the company to look at new ways to engage their supply chain in behavioural sustainability and the company’s overall commitment to sustainable construction.

Simons have been working seamlessly with the John Lewis Partnership on a variety of projects across the country & throughout the year. There has been a broad spread of challenging situations, seeing Simons challenged & succeed on health & safety, tight production times & demanding sustainability combinations through the company’s Building Greener strategy. Simons are currently working on a new development for Waitrose and John Lewis in Horsham, which will be opening in 2015.

Tom Robinson, Chief Executive of Simons said, “Responsible development is at the core of Simons. To be recognised for our approach to sustainability, by a customer as renowned and respected as the John Lewis Partnership is a huge achievement for everyone at Simons, one we are all incredibly grateful for. This shows our teams that the lengths that they go to in order to achieve the highest standards are recognised. To be amongst such formidable suppliers is further proof of our ability to deliver the right fit in the right way, whilst being as conscious as we should be, raising the bar for sustainable construction along the way. We all look forward to  continuing to provide a sustainable way of working, for Waitrose, John Lewis and for our teams.“
