Simons "Build Safer" with local schoolchildren
Members of the Simons Group project team who have recently completed work on the new look Waterside Shopping Centre in Lincoln have been working with schoolchildren at St Hugh’s Catholic Primary School and finishing off a new range of vegetable patches for the different age groups, engaging the children in how to grow vegetables in different seasons.
The work is down to the company’s ‘Simons Says’ competition, which was held locally to raise levels of engagement in health and safety. One of the schoolchildren, Alessandro Tasselli (11) was announced as the winner of the competition in March, designing a costume to help communicate health, safety and environmental messages to children on future Simons Construction sites.
The aim of the ‘Simons Says’ project was to engage with the community to help improve the image of construction, in line with the company’s ‘Building Safer’ and ‘Building Greener’ policies. The project has been taken to fashion students at the University of Lincoln and development will continue on the company’s other projects to encourage a nationwide awareness.
Parveen Noor, Schoolteacher at St Hugh’s said, "We are delighted that one of our pupil's designs was chosen as the winner of Simons Group’ competition. In addition, we are thrilled with the prize of a landscaped vegetable patch for our school. This will greatly benefit all of our pupils giving them the opportunity to learn new skills by growing and nurturing their own vegetables and widening their knowledge about where their food comes from. We are confident our green-fingered young gardeners will soon be enjoying the fruits of their hard work! Once again, thank you to Simons for being so generous."
The team approached the supply chain who have been working with them on the Waterside, asking for help to pull off the project. Key suppliers have included:
Cathedral Joinery - making planters
Simons Scaffolding - logistics and fencing
