SIMONS DEVELOPMENTS LTD SHINE LIGHT ON EAST LEAKE RAILWAY STATION RECREATION PROJECT

1 July 2019

PRESS RELEASE

Simons Developments Limited has helped a local heritage trust salvage a historically-important lamppost from a disused plot of land in West Bridgford.

The company, which hopes to bring a Lidl store and mixed-use development providing new homes and jobs to the Wilford Lane site, was contacted by LNER (GC) Heritage Trust about the lamppost earlier this year.

The recovered lamppost will be given a new lease of life as part of the Trust’s project to recreate the former Great Central Railway Station in East Leake, which closed just over 50 years ago.

Lloyd Varley, Chairman of the Trust, said:

“We’d like to thank the team at Simons for agreeing to help us recover the lamppost. This bears a similar resemblance to the ones originally used at East Leake Station and we are looking forward to installing it as part of our recreation project there.

“This year is particularly significant, as it marks 50 years since the last train stopped in East Leake. The lamppost will be very symbolic and will help us properly honour the history of the station, which was, in its heyday, an integral part of the local community.”

Phil Gallagher, Senior Project Manager for Simons, said:

“We’re always looking to support the local communities where we work so we were very pleased to be able to help Mr Varley and the Trust with the lamppost removal and donation. It’s fantastic that future generations will now be able to see what the station looked like at its peak and we’re really excited to see the finished project.”

Simons submitted a planning application for the site, just off Wilford Lane and between the Becket School and the ROKO Health Club, to Rushcliffe Borough Council in December last year.

Should planning consent be granted, the site will be transformed into a mixed-use development comprising a modern Lidl store, a family-friendly pub, a drive-thru coffee shop, residential apartments and a retirement complex. A planning decision is expected later this year.
