Simons Group host sustainable construction competition with Harrogate Primary School
Simons Group have been working on a design competition with Oatlands Infant School in Harrogate and have celebrated with the winners this week. During the construction of the new 10,000 sq ft M&S store in Harrogate, members of the project team approached the local school with the intent of a project that would raise awareness for sustainable construction whilst engaging the children with the store’s features.
75 Year 2 schoolchildren of Oatlands submitted drawings, which the project team whittled down to three winners. Chloe Brett, Elsa Gordon and Finlay McCreanor went to meet team members on Friday and were given book vouchers and shown posters of their drawings on the site hoarding. These will be donated to the staff team with the intention of being given to the school at a later date. The children explained to the Simons team why they had incorporated certain features and features of the M&S store that they were looking forward to seeing upon the store’s opening on Wednesday 25th June.
Mrs Robson, Headteacher of Oatlands Infant School said, “The children really enjoyed designing their posters. We talked about our previous visit which was during the main construction stage. They remembered so much about the materials used and the environmental features of the new M&S building. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to have our ideas displayed, viewed and enjoyed.“
A spokesman for Simons added, “Community engagement and sustainability in construction are two of the first things we look to achieve on our projects and we are thrilled to have been able to engage with Oatlands on both levels. The children provided us with fantastic drawings and we loved talking to the winners of the competition, they clearly put real effort into their designs. We will be showing the children around the store shortly and look forward to hearing of further engagements through the M&S store team.“
