Simons host hoarding competition at Oakridge Park
Currently working on the new retail development at Oakridge Park, construction company Simons Group have invited children from two local schools to Oakridge Park, to paint the hoardings surrounding their works for Newcrest in Milton Keynes. Children from Stanton School joined the project team recently to start the artworks with the children from Pepper Hill School decorating the remaining hoarding space. Local artist Neil Keane of Arkade Graphics created the outline of the artwork incorporating the three winning designs from each school and helping out with the very high parts.
Pete Lindsay, Business Manager of Pepper Hill & Stanton Federation said of the visits, “The children at Stanton School had an enjoyable and creative experience which inspired them, not only with their creativity but one or two have decided that construction may be the chosen career for them! The children were very keen to identify the sections of the finished mural that they had designed themselves.
“The children at Pepper Hill School were enthusiastic about being part of such a large piece of art work, especially as it had been designed by their friends at school. The children loved looking at the finished piece of art and telling their class which parts they had painted. Parents and friends of the school have also commented on how amazing it looks and are very proud of the children’s work.“
Simons are making great progress on site and working towards a summer 2016 completion. The works consist of a new Asda food store, a small parade of seven retail units, external adjacent roadways, three bus stops and car parking areas adjacent to a recently constructed residential area.
Community engagement will be high on the agenda throughout the works. As an associate member of the Considerate Constructor Scheme, Simons will work with Newcrest and the local community to ensure that any neighbours, interested parties and stakeholders are kept fully informed on progress and possible disruption through newsletters issued by the project team, along with the company’s website and social media channels. During the build programme, Simons will be engaging in activities with other local organisations, conducting site tours, presentations and projects during the construction phase.
Mike Van Den Berg, Development Manager of Newcrest Estates added, "The schoolchildren at Pepper Hill and Stanton have done a fantastic job with the hoarding competition that Simons have hosted on behalf of Newcrest. We have been delighted with Simons approach to community engagement whilst on site and we hope that this helps to keep people in the know and up to speed with the scheme's progress. Newcrest are delighted with the progress the construction team are making and thoroughly look forward to seeing the works complete and the doors open for business in due course."
