Simons Receive Top Considerate Constructor Award
Simons Group have received a Gold National Site Award after achieving a phenomenal 45/50 on site for Sainsbury’s in Melton Mowbray. Under the new CCS scoring system which changed last year, it is the highest score that Simons have achieved to date and the project is one of only a handful to have achieved this score across the country. David Watson, Chairman of the Considerate Constructor Scheme said of the project: The strong encouragement of all subcontractors to engage apprentices was just one facet of this highly professional site’s considerate performance. Standards of appearance, behaviour and safety were rigorously enforced throughout the entire workforce and supported by facilities to address minorities and any special requirements of operatives.
The project was to be a sustainable design feature which would create a positive addition to the surrounding area. This was realised in the shape of a 38,000 sq ft store with a timber frame, Café and 300 car parking spaces. Work included the installation of new traffic lights and a pelican crossing, with improvements to the surrounding footpaths and bus shelters. The project incorporated a programme of 20 weeks enabling works with 22 weeks to build and fit out the store.
The CCS score of 45/50 on this project was achieved by the team’s huge efforts in ensuring best practice at all times and by the planning which was undertaken in setting up the site with consideration to the neighbours and surrounding environment. Activities included various school visits and site visits for schoolchildren, along with innovative engagement on site and being considerate to the neighbouring residents, including creating an access ramp for a nearby resident. The score puts Simons firmly at the top
of the league in terms of Sainsbury’s contractors and makes the project an exemplar for other Simons projects nationwide.
